When tackling home improvements, maximising space is always a top priority. The two most popular options are conversions and extensions. But what’s the difference, and which will best suit your requirements?
By transforming the existing space within the home, usually the attic, basement, or garage, into a fully functional aspect of the property, a conversion basically repurposes existing interiors. The most popular examples of successful conversions include dormer loft and garage conversions.
However, not all roofing structures are the same. Depending on the layout and budget restraints, clients in Bingley may prefer to upgrade to a hip-to-gable conversion or the more elaborate mansard conversion.
Garage conversions, however, are the perfect home renovations for most of our clients’ needs. With so few parking their cars in the garage, it makes sense to merge the unused space with the rest of the property. This is achieved by updating the insulation significantly and inserting RSJs when completing the structural alterations.
House extensions involve adding extra space to your property, either at the side or rear. Depending on your home’s current style, you may prefer a single-storey solution to your space-creating needs or a double-storey extension.
The increased living space won’t impact the rest of your property but will enhance it. With greater design flexibility, you have a blank canvas upon which you can make your mark with a new kitchen and dining area, a bespoke home theatre or entertainment area, or a much-needed home office.
The size of your new house extension will depend on the area surrounding your property and whether or not you wish to build within permitted development or seek planning permission for a more substantial addition to your home. As always, our local builders at Bingley Builders are here to help with advice based on our many years in the trade.
